National D-Day Memorial - Bedford, VA : On D-Day, June 6, 1944, nineteen young men from the town of Bedford, Virginia died on the beaches of Normandy. With a population of only 3,200, the town of Bedford suffered the highest proportional losses of D-Day. The National D-Day Memorial was built in Bedford for this reason, and helps us to remember the sacrifice given by not only the men of Bedford on that day, but from all the other soldiers from the U.S. and our allies. More information can be found at www.dday.org

Civil War Battlefield at Antietam (Sharpsburg, MD) : The Civil War battle at Antietam (near Sharpsburg, MD) took place on September 17, 1862 and still ranks today as the bloodiest one-day battle in U.S. History. There were nearly 23,000 casualties at Antietam (3,650 dead, 17,300 wounded, 1,770 captured or MIA) and the battle led to Lincoln's issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. Unlike many battlefields, Antietam is still remarkably similar to the way it was when the battle took place. (Period photos courtesy National Park Service.
